New storage limits coming to select Microsoft 365 services

Microsoft has implemented new storage limits for Microsoft 365 Education licences, discontinuing the previously available unlimited storage. As part of our contract renewal, Nelson Mandela University’s total storage allocation is now capped at 450TB, compared to the 770TB we were previously using. Thanks to the proactive efforts of ICT Services—through the archiving of old emails and the deactivation of dormant accounts—our current usage has been reduced to 620TB. However, further reductions are essential to comply with Microsoft’s policy. To support this, the University is launching a three-month, campus-wide storage reduction campaign. All staff are requested to review and reduce their email and OneDrive storage during this period. While final storage limits are still under consideration, staff with high usage will be contacted directly with tailored guidance.

Please note: The current storage allowance will expire at the end of September 2025, after which Microsoft’s reduced limits will be enforced.
